Need Skates?

The City of Waterloo does not rent out skates on site, but skate rentals are available up the street at McPhails Cycle and Sport (98 King Street North, Waterloo).

  • Saturday 9am - 5pm

Covid-19 Safety Protocols

Do not visit a rink if you:

  • Have a fever, new cough, shortness of breath or a combination of muscle aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat or runny nose
  • Have travelled outside of Canada within the last 14 days
  • Have been in close contact with a person with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19

To all others, please wash your hands or use sanitizer before and after every visit, and maintain physical distancing of 6 feet/2 metres.

When visiting the rink:  

  • Capacity is limited to 50 people at a time on the ice surface and is subject to change
  • Follow directional signage to enter and exit the ice surface
  • Physical distancing must be maintained
  • Good respiratory etiquette is encouraged. This includes coughing or sneezing into a bent elbow and wearing a mask. See regional public health advice for more
  • Outdoor washrooms will not be available
  • Please be aware that outdoor Public Square rink amenities are not sanitized
  • Please be thoughtful of your time on the rink and give others who are waiting a chance to skate
  • No games or scrimmages of any kind
  • Masks recommended, but not required

Other outdoor community rinks

Community rinks are located at schools and parks and run by volunteers. Contact for more information on helping out.

Locations are available using our outdoor rink map. Schedules are not currently online but will be posted at rink sites.

Hockey games or shinny are not permitted . Drills and shooting with physical distancing are allowed.

General rules for outdoor rinks:

  • Use of appropriate helmets is strongly recommended.
  • Please respect our environment, dispose of litter in the receptacle provided.
  • Slap shots are not permitted at any time.
  • Pucks must stay on the rink surface at all times.
  • Hockey will be permitted during posted hours only.
  • Refrain from skating during periods of thaw when ice surface is wet or soft.
  • Keep children, pets, and vulnerable individuals away from rink surfaces that are wet or thawed.

Free skating in Waterloo Public Square

Waterloo Public Square

Enjoy free skating this winter on the outdoor skating rink in Waterloo Public Square. Located in uptown Waterloo at 75 King St South, the rink is open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily during cold weather months.

Please note, the rink can be closed due to poor weather (call 519-886-1177 for closure information), and it is not designed for hockey - sticks and pucks are not allowed. In accordance with current Public Health guidelines, capacity is on the rink is limited to 50 people.
